| Frequently Asked Questions |
How can I help out in making community broadcasting happen in Unalaska?
You can volunteer your time, offer your feedback and pledge your financial support.
Why is the reception poor in some places around town?
KIAL-AM operates at only 50 watts under an unusual letter of authority granted by the FCC in 1977. To improve signal reception, limit electrical interference from flourescent lighting and electrical appliances operating on the same circuit. Also, digital-display tuners will allow you to tune in more effectively to 1450.
Expect signal improvements in 2008, when KIAL transitions to digital FM!
Why don't you schedule more news programming on KIAL?
The reason is twofold. 1) We don't have access to real-time public radio programming via satellite unless we sync with another public radio station. Our upcoming satellite downlink project will link us to NPR through two satellites, with a transfer point in Fairbanks at KUAC. 2) We provide KSKA-FM via translator to give you a choice of public radio programming. Because we can't control their programming choices, we provide you with distinct programming on KIAL.
How do we receive new programs?
We repeat BBC, Morning Edition & Weekend Edition from KMXT in Kodiak, AK. The rest of our programming we must download directly from show producers and distributors. In the old days (prior to 2005), we repeated KDLG 24 hours a day, with interruptions for our own local news programming fifteen minutes during midday and evening news, and a smattering of volunteer programmers. New technologies have allowed KIAL to operate as a full service station, though present levels of state funding prevent us from further growth. All programs aired on KIAL are locally-selected.
How do I get to the station?
We are located on the corner of 5th and Broadway, in the Burma Road Chapel. Our entrance faces the school.
How do I get my event read on the air, posted on the website or put on Channel 8?
For community events, you can submit you event to our website which will then be read on KIAL and posted on the Channel 8 Bulletin Board.
What do the call letters KIAL stand for?
As far as we know, the arbitrary call sign KIAL doesn't signify anything of notable importance. The call sign most likely orginated at some point during the military presence in Dutch Harbor. If you have information regarding the history of the station and the call sign, please email us!
How can I get a personal, business-related or job-availability annoucement placed on Channel 8 during the Bulletin Board Hours?
Please email Channel 8 or fax your design and wording specifications to 581-1634.
Why don't you post the Channel 8 announcements on the website?
We don't have time or staff necessary to manage this extra burden. Hopefully, this will change soon!
Why is pledging to UCB important?
In Unalaska, you not only have a choice of two public radio stations, you have a community TV station as well. These services cost money, and our grants are not enough. Listener support from people like you will determine the future of this non-profit.
Pledging and volunteering are the best examples of community support because they allow us to grow and be more. Your financial contributions allow us to pay for the programming that you want.
